Spelling
Spelling words came home today.  It is our first week of review.  Please make sure your child studies the words throughout the week.  Thank you!!
Book Order fro Summer Reading
We are doing a final book order!  Please submit all orders by Friday June 4, 2010. I will submit our classroom order and books will be shipped to Tyler. There is no obligation to order. I just wanted to extend this opportunity to you. Scholastic books are very reasonably priced, and every book order gives us free books or points toward free books and resources for the classroom. 
Dr. Invention
We arecreatingour own inventions on Friday.   We need empty boxes and plastic bottles. Please make sure all plastic bottles are clean. 
 
Fourth Quarter
We are off to a great start in the fourth quarter!! This is the quarter we do our final preparations for third grade.

Field Trip
We are going to the National Zoo on April 29, 2010!  The chaperone forms and permission slips will be attached to this week's Wednesday Notes. 
Extra Credit

We are learning to compare and contrast.  Pick a character from a book.  Compare and contrast the character with yourself. 

 

We are learning about observation.  Pick an object and record your observations about it. 

Word Study Information

Due to the short school week, your child will keep the same word study words until April 16, 2010.  An extended word study packet will come home on Monday to further enhance their spelling skills.  Their test will be on Friday April 16. 

Test

Our Ancient Civilization test will be on Thursday March 25, 2010.  A study guide and practice test will go home on Tuesday.  The practice test is due Thursday but can be turned in on Wednesday. 

Ancient Egypt Day

We had a wonderful day today exploring Ancient Egypt.  I would like to thank all the parents who donated sugar cubes and glue.

Back to School

It was great to be back.  We worked hard and made the most of our shortened days.  This week we continued to explore the properties of matter.

Social Studies

We learned about the Pueblo Indians last week.  We are making a pueblo.  Check out the pictures below.

Math

In math, we are working on collecting and sorting data.  We are also working on ways to display data.  We have learned about tally marks, line plots, and bar graphs.

Social Studies

We have been learning about the Powhatan Indians this week.  We learned a lot about how they adapted to their environment.      

Holiday Party

Thank you to all the parents who donated the food, supplies, and drinks for the winter party.

Geography Day

We had a great time on Geography Day.  We made and painted salt maps of the United States.   We made a cake of our country.

We are busy researching animal adaptations.  Each person signed up for an animal of interest.  Last week we started researching our animals.  We learned how to take notes.  Check out the pictures below.

We have been busy learning about the mountain ranges, rivers, and lakes of the United States.

Turkey Trot Take 3

The Turkey Trot has been cancelled due to rain.  We will try again on Tuesday December 1, 2009.

Mountains
We have been learning about the Rocky and Applachian Mountains.  On Friday we painted them.

Pajama Day

Monday November 23, 2009 will be Pajama Day in room 103!  We filled our second chart and this is how we wanted to celebrate.  Please make sure that the pajamas are appropriate for school and that your child has on safe footwear.  They may change into slippers at school. 

Verbs
This week we are exploring verbs.  Verbs are words that show action.  Hunt through books at home and record the verbs you find. 
Second Quarter

 We completed our first week of the second quarter!   We explored the various ways that plants, people, and animals adapt to survive in their environment.

New Unit of Study
We are starting our new unit on geography this week.  Have your child bring in a map to share with the class. 
Test

Our weather test will be on Friday.  A study guide will come home on Tuesday.  Please set aside 5-10 minutes a school night to review the key information and vocabulary. 

Our Student Teacher Finishes her Assignment

Ms. Sinclair has completed her assigned time with us.  We enjoyed her stay and help.  She is wonderful!   We wish her all the best in fifth grade. 

Rainy Day Fun

How to learn and have fun on a rainy day….

 

1. Camp out with your family and have a read in.

 

2. Pick your favorite part of a book and act it out.

 

3. Read a book.  Draw and color the book’s setting on a piece of paper or poster board. Then create a puppet for each character.  Retell the story using the background and puppets.

Stomping Out Bullying

We had a great kick off to our school anti-bullying prevention program!  Red Grammer performed on Tuesday.  Our school goal is to teach each child how to interact in a respectful way, without putting anyone else down through name calling or making fun.

Conferences

In math, we have been working on our number sense.  We have been breaking down numbers.

How many ways can you make the number 17?  Write down 10 or more ways.  Bring in your answers to share with the class!
